In this economy.. Groceries – Series
A few weeks ago, I mentioned I wanted to share how to navigate your finances in this economy. This week, I was invited to facilitate a money conversation with the DC Chapter of SAGSAW (Save a Girl, Save a World) and students of Howard University. While doing a budgeting exercise, one student asked if shopping at certain places matters. I said absolutely. I’m the queen of a deal. I will get gas at Costco. Before I go somewhere else, I shop for low prices, especially online.
With the rise of grocery prices, here are five grocery stores that are low-cost, from lowest to highest.
Sav-A-Lot
Aldi
Lidl
Farmers Markets
Trader Joe’s
If you live in Texas, H-E-B is my go-to store.
If you live in Delaware, Produce Junction is a great place for inexpensive fruits and vegetables.
If you live near a military base and have access to a commissary, the commissary at times has inexpensive foods, but you will need to do your own research.
Looking for bulk items? Try Costco, Ollie’s, or BJ’s Wholesale. I buy toilet paper, paper towels, feminine products, and hygiene products (toothpaste, soap, deodorant) in bulk. Items that will not expire after 6 months. I keep them stocked to reduce going back and forth to the stores.
I like to go grocery shopping during the day on Tuesday mornings. Items aren’t picked over, and stores are typically fully stocked. You can always ask the store manager/call ahead to determine when their truck comes in.
How do I know all of this information? My second job as a high school student was as a grocery bagger at my local base commissary. I was promoted to student store worker, where I stocked shelves, pulled expired food items, and changed the prices of food.
What are your go-to shopping habits to spend less? Send me an email (hi@thewealthplayground.com) and let me know.
